Our Hope for Years to Come
THE HOUSE OF HOPE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
One year after the launch of the “Our Hope for Years to Come” campaign to preserve and rennovate our church, a great deal has been accomplished. As of November 15, 2011 over $5,700,000 has been pledged or contributed toward a goal of $7 million. This is over 80% of our goal and we are optimistic about final success.
The Renovation Projects fit into six main categories:
- Control Water Infiltration/Gutter and Downspout Repair
- Roof replacement on Sanctuary & Administrative Wing
- Bell Tower Renovation & Exterior Tuck Pointing
- Accessibility Improvements
- Infrastructure & Energy Efficiency
- Upgrades to the Facility

Control Water Infiltration/Gutter and Downspout Project
Completed Fall 2011
The gutters and downspouts on the exterior of the church were in obvious need of repair. They were twisted, bent, and missing sections in some areas. Theft over the summer required replacement of many more. The new copper gutters and downspouts that are being attached will be quite helpful with water infiltration around the building. Flooding in the youth room was a problem over the summer, which will be corrected with the new gutters and downspouts.

Roof Replacement on Sanctuary & Administrative Office Area
Completed Fall/Winter 2011
The new roof, now with decking, insulation, and an ice shield was finished in early November. The crews worked tirelessly through the summer sun and heat. The new insulation will greatly improve the energy efficiency of the sanctuary.

As you can see from this picture, there was a lot of roof to replace! A persistent leakage problem in and near the Elizabeth Chapel is also being addressed.

Scaffolding went up in the spring. The crew removed all of the 100 year-old slate from the sanctuary and the administration wing. After the removal, new decking, insulation, an ice shield, and new slate tiles were installed. We hope you will agree, the finished roof looks fantastic!
A portion of the removed roof tiles were saved and offered to members to commemorate the Church’s 100th anniversary in 2014. They have been cut into coasters and trivets engraved with the campaign logo. This provides a way for all church members to hold onto a piece of the church’s history.

Bell Tower Renovation and Exterior Tuck Pointing
Slated for Fall 2011- Fall 2012
The tuck pointing and exterior cleaning of the building began in early November. Crews are removing the ivy and started grinding the mortar from the north side of the building.

The largest item is the bell tower, which will cost approximately $1.75 million to renovate. We have been very fortunate in contracting, as quality suppliers are willing to give low bids in order to keep their crews working.
Bell tower interior work will begin in February, scaffolding will be in place in March. The exterior work is slated to begin in April with an expected completion by November 2012.

Cables were added to the top of the Bell Tower to hold the pinnacles upright years ago. Many cracks and shifts have occurred, some patched several times over the years, which inhibit the integrity of the structure. If the necessary repair work is not addressed, the stone from the Bell Tower is in danger of being dislodged and falling down.

Upgrades to the Facility
Youth Pantry Renovation
Completed August 2011
The Youth Pantry has been completed! We celebrated with a Youth Pantry Sneak Peek on Sunday, November 6. This portion of the Church renovation provides our youth a comfortable space to connect and share their faith. It also provides an efficient area to provide food and snacks for our Project Home guests during their yearly stay in the month of October.

Stained Glass Windows
Completed August 2011
Have you noticed how much brighter the East Transept is? The beautiful stained glass window was removed, re-leaded, and repaired over the summer by Gaytee Stained Glass. It was a fascinating project to watch. A representative from the company attended our Rally Sunday festivities to share their methods and answer questions about the process.
Different options for adding storm windows to the outside of the glass with venting for moisture and air transfer are being considered.

Accessibility Improvements
Physical and Electronic
To be addressed
Work on accessibility, the great hall kitchen, and upgrading to the mechanical and electrical systems are next on our list. Projects are being identified, defined and estimated. Work on these projects will be started as soon as we have raised the funds to cover the work. In particular, we are deeply distressed that some members and visitors are not able to come to worship because they cannot negotiate the many steps and different levels throughout the building.
Some mechanical and electrical systems are nearly 100 years old and need upgrading. And finally, there are numerous other projects, including other stained glass windows, that need to be studied, preschool and Sunday School classroom updates, interior and exterior windows refurbished, etc.

The elevator has been declared unuseable and the wheelchair lift often proves to be inadequate. A subcommittee has been formed and is looking into elevator repair or replacement and in addressing interior and exterior accessibility.

The Kitchen is the heart of the home and ours is in a need of a makeover! A modernized kitchen area will allow us to extend hospitality to our congregation and guests.

Infrastructure & Energy Efficiency
It’s hard to miss the fact that our Church is almost 100 years old and it is showing signs of it’s age around the physical building in some very obvious ways.

But it’s very important not to forget the core of the building. The heating, cooling and electrical systems that control the church environment are old and are in need of being updated in a sustainable way. Some very necessary improvements are required in order to improve the efficiency of these systems and also save energy in the long-term.

These projects leave us well-committed for 2011/2012, while other improvement ideas are still being discussed, such as additional storm windows, refinishing the parking lots, upgrades to sound and security systems..
Such big projects require the support of all members of our congregation. Together, we will improve the safety and security of the Church and offer a comfortable year-round setting for all programs, activities, and events for decades to come.
Thank you, if you have already made your pledge. Our team of volunteers continues to try to personally contact all members. However, if you’re ready to pledge or if you have any questions, please contact Jana Robbins at 651-223-7555 or CapitalCampaign@hohchurch.org.
